Hey, editors @ Times, Globe, Post, Guardian, Globe&Mail, etc: Why are stories like these absent or buried? Conventional news is a nonrandom sample of the worst things happening anywhere in the world that day, poisoning readers with fatalism, cynicism, helplessness, radicalism.

Because they don't generate clicks. Journalism now is driven by page views, and indignation drives the most. It's not that different from the old "if it bleeds, it leads" model, really, except that they optimize for indignation rather than horror.
