Notice the trend toward increased legibility. It's a common mistake in young companies to trade legibility for distinctiveness. We encourage founders to go straight to the logo they'll have when they get that out of their system.
In a sense I agree with you, but such a rationale can (and does) lead to the "open-sansification" of startup logotypes. They just pick an icon, a google font, and type their name in plain text. That's not branding.
It may not be branding, but it's better than what they do by default.
