In a sense I agree with you, but such a rationale can (and does) lead to the "open-sansification" of startup logotypes. They just pick an icon, a google font, and type their name in plain text. That's not branding.
It may not be branding, but it's better than what they do by default.
It is kinda ironic though, since the 1982 logo is more readable than the 1987 one.
