I think those notes are helpful for the writer- you get to add info without making the writing worse

I just took a look (http://paulgraham.com/genius.html ) and it seems like your footnotes are like an appendix. Seems if you prefix the referenced sentence fragment above each note it would work without any numbering or in-text citations.

Always appealed to the completist in me; what was an issue, though, was that you'd have to scroll back every time you read a footnote. My guess is this is why people gave up on them originally, not because they didn't see the value in them.

I usually skip over footnotes unless it's a specific footnote I'm interested in. With this essay I did skim through the notes.

Hi Paul. I miss the old footnote style. Reading them afterwards, it was causing me unnecessary cognitive load trying to remember what they referred to. With the former method, it seems like both ways of reading would be satisfied. Good to see you back writing essays anyway.
