Indeed I don't see how you can genuinely have an obsessive interest in something that you tried to pick because of your main interest which is becoming a genius. Newton would probably be equally happy if his work didn't result in being a genius, so it would not be a lost bet.
I meant those bets failed in the sense that they didn't achieve any significant results.

did he advocate for people to fake an obsession? I think he's saying that, yes, some people become obsessive without intentionally being guided to it, but impressionable children may be able to be guided to become obsessed with their interests, which may lead to future obsessions
