I didn't let myself write essays while I was working on Bel. The Refragmentation (http://www.paulgraham.com/re.html ) took 3 months, and when I returned to Bel I could barely understand it. So I said no more essays till Bel was done. Now that it's done I can work on essays again.

Yes, when you are in the midst of building something, documentating your reasoning at the same time, even with comments, is hard. Even then trying to understand after a hiatus is harder still. I think non-programmers have difficulty understanding this problem.
