Newborns are easy. They eat one thing. They can't wander into trouble. They only need food, clean diapers, and lots of sleep. With 2-4 yos, you have to do everything for them, plus keep them from accidentally killing themselves. All while they randomly argue with you.

The period during which newborns don't sleep through the night is amazingly short. You're talking about two months of disrupted sleep vs 2-3 years handling all their nutrition, hygiene, dressing, transportation, protection needs (plus, again, dealing with all the arguing).
