The reason I never subscribe to news sites is not that I can't or won't pay for it, but that I assume signing up will be impossibly cumbersome, and that they'll both auto-renew the subscription and refuse to let me cancel without calling them on the phone.

I'd be interested to know which of the bazillion startup solutions floating around out there you're into. I toyed for a bit with an FB clone but where instead of a "like" you give a small bit of virtual currency (not crypto.. more like in-game currency that can be cashed out).
