Cisgender, cultural appropriation, heteronormative..."only the affluent can afford to learn strange vocabulary because ordinary people have real problems to worry about." My latest for @Quillette. Many thanks to @toadmeister #luxurybeliefshttps://quillette.com/2019/11/16/thorstein-veblens-theory-of-the-leisure-class-a-status-update/ …

Your argument would be a lot more convincing if you qualified it. I'm affluent, but when I advocate drug legalization I'm not engaging in a status display.

Fair enough. A tenet of signaling theory is that it is not necessarily calculated. We don't consciously advertise our opinions for status any more than a peacock consciously advertises his plumage. It's just built into us. I could've done a better job explaining

Surely there are *some* people who advocate *some* opinions for reasons other than status. It's so implausible that status is the only driver of publicly expressed opinions. That would mean no one could be more status conscious than anyone else, which can't be right.

Plus there are affluent conservatives as well as affluent liberals, and they have completely different opinions. If affluence were sufficient to make people advocate x, all rich people would have the same opinions.

Yeah. My observations are about a narrow band educated at elite universities, not all affluent. My understanding is that wealthy progressives promote change, which facilitates the development of fashionable beliefs

Not sure that necessarily follows. Those who publicly express opinions more often or more forcefully might be more status conscious than others. But I do agree that status is not the only reason people express certain views. Some incur social costs when expressing unpopular views

Could it not also simply be driven by levels of individual insecurity? Those who are confident/feel purpose are less motivated to signal or gain status than those who struggle with their confidence/purpose? Honest intent more likely in confident individuals.

Well, this status theory proposes that they choose things that are costly to them and also different from what lower class people would do. So you may symbolize status by being able to rebel or demand changes. At least you can symbolize that you live in a free and rich country.
