Fair enough. A tenet of signaling theory is that it is not necessarily calculated. We don't consciously advertise our opinions for status any more than a peacock consciously advertises his plumage. It's just built into us. I could've done a better job explaining
Surely there are *some* people who advocate *some* opinions for reasons other than status. It's so implausible that status is the only driver of publicly expressed opinions. That would mean no one could be more status conscious than anyone else, which can't be right.

I've seen recreational weed usage practically ruin the lives (and brains) of *many* "lower class" people I know. The privileged class advocating weed simply is not connected to debilitating weed addiction in social circles they're not involved in.
