I think I get what you mean. When I was a kid, all the cool kids wore Zeppelin shirts. But I didn't like the cool kids, and they didn't like me. So, I didn't like Zeppelin. But, as it turns out, Zeppelin is an incredible band.

I think this applies to any situation in which one avoids something that happens to be popular with the masses because one doesn't want to be identified with what is "common". Sports, certain movies, books, etc. Very typical, sadly, bc great, timeless art is usually also popular.
