Incidentally, it's fine to compete with 50 other companies, so long as you understand what they're all missing. (If they weren't all missing something, there wouldn't be 50 of them.)

Good point. In enterprise software, it's really just 50 sales organizations; what the technology is or isn't missing doesn't matter that much.

I think enterprise buying decisions are inverted at a similar rate as top-down management hierarchies. People who demand the best managers often also demand the best tools.
