It’s because the true value of top schools isn’t a 10x education; it’s a in 10x social network/signaling. Their goal is to fill the pipeline with the top candidates. So everyone who goes there has a connection to someone with power/money/knowledge that will 10x your network.

I think it’s the same problem as leader performance evaluation. You only know whether they’ve done a good job by looking at long future outcomes of students. But that’s a super lagging indicator. And it’s mostly just attracting the ambitious ones.

the column i always cared about in us news was the rating by college faculty peers. many schools in the 8-20 category dropped right out when sorted this way, and then berkeley, ucla, michigan, rice, u chicago etc - actual academies - would be in their rightful position

If you wanted to detect which colleges were gaming the rankings, this diff would be a good place to start.

I would be curious to see totally separate data-based rankings. like the ratio of # of students to # of alumni who later get accepted into y combinator

College rankings are backward looking and extremely biased. We should rank colleges based on the % of students in debt 1, 3, 5 years after graduation and default rates. We would get a much better overall picture. 3 year ROI is the most important factor.

I agree with this, however some universities like Tsinghua and ETH Zurich have climbed up in rankings (into the top 10/20) even when judged by the metrics that ranked Ivy League/Stanford/MIT etc as top 10

They tweak the weights to get new rankings each year, so that they can sell this year’s rankings
