Isn't that half the point of things like Apple Pay?
The web is 25 years old, and signing up for and paying for things is still broken. Why do you have to create an account and make up a password? Why do you have to type in a number off a card in your pocket? There is a big opportunity here that will seem obvious in retrospect.

Is there a way to do easy single sign on (what it sounds to me like you’re suggesting) without handing over a massive amount of power to the company that controls it, like Facebook or Google?

Apple has almost solved this problem with Apple Sign In and Apple Pay. On the back of existing infra!
