A couple years ago I met a guy who'd just arrived from Kazakhstan. I asked him what surprised him about SF. He said how dirty it was.
As an Indian from a tier 3 city, I think I'm better off being home and living on SF Twitter.
Seems like a uniquely California problem, sadly. Texas, Mid-West, and even NYC to a degree are sparkling clean in comparison. Disgusting driving on the highway seeing roads lined with trash
Tumbleweeds-of-trash under the overhead train lines is one of my 3 earliest memories of coming to America as a kid in the early '90s. NYC beaches (seen later that year) were _the most_ surprisingly-trashy places.
To be fair, disposable, non-biodegradable things just weren't as available in other places at the time.
The first time I went to SF I was 11 and I thought it was something out of a Dickens novel.
