Visible wear shows how other people interacted with something. Medium's "top highlight" does something similar but much lower-res. I'm sure people have tried overlaying heat maps on content, but it didn't increase clicks.
Incidentally, highlighting in books has a strong negative correlation with quality. Books with highlighting are mostly textbooks, which mostly suck.
