I was shocked to read about a company in which the CEO was paid 60x as much as ordinary employees. Typical late stage capitalism, I thought.

Except the company was a regiment in the Soviet army in 1952. Regimental commanders were paid about 3000 rubles a month, and privates 50.

Neither privates, nor commanders needed the money anyway.

Conscripts, remember, not employees. Only the officers and NCOs had the option of looking for work elsewhere. I’m surprised the conscripts were paid at all.

Same in modern day Israel. Newly enlisted get less than $100/month if I remember correctly.

I have a controller's books from Bear Ridge Collier and it showed the average employee making between 15-18$ a week and most broke even with the company store and Housing in the 1930s. The controller got paid 220$ a week
