As names, car and cdr are great: short, and just the right visual distance apart. The only argument against them is that they're not mnemonic. But this is a weak argument.

If you don’t have constraints on the length, why not just give them full names that clearly indicate what they do? If it’s important to write copy in decks and blog posts using clear and simple language, why not a codebase?
You use them so often that any name would be equally mnemonic after a week, so you might as well pick a pair that are short.

Why? Because it’s easier to type? Most editors have solutions for tab-completion and snippet expansion.

Short names are easier to read in themselves, and lead to less line-breaking, which makes expressions easier to read. It's particularly important that commonly used names are short. The most commonly used words in natural languages are short, and it's not a coincidence.
