Yes-men being the late investors? All 3 “they”s being early investors?
One useful thing about early investors: when you're powerful enough that you're surrounded by yes-men, they'll tell you the truth. Not so much because they're more principled as because they don't realize how powerful you are.

I believe he means when you become powerful enough that you become surrounded by yes men (late investors) you already have truth sayers in your back pocket (i.e. early investors)

The same is true of early employees which sometimes is reason enough to retain them even after they’ve hit a ceiling.
