Well, when you’re a good writer, you treat your readers with respect. So you believe, or even know, that they will figure out who’s right anyway.
If you're writing something meant to last, it's a mistake to take pot shots at your opponents. If you're correct and your opponents are mistaken, this will be boring to future readers, who won't have heard of them.

I have noticed the exact same thing in the writings of people on the right side of history but always figured it was a nice but inadvertent for the opponents to get immortalized too. :-) Asking for this to go is perhaps being churlish. :-)

I agree with the first sentence because of kindness reasons. Doesn't the second sentence assume that 'correctness' survives?

Great point. But I think in this instance, it’s fair to assume that correct = fit to survive.
