I've doubts that people who like to watch football enjoy football as an activity. Rather, they enjoy namely watching it.

With everything available to watch you will probably watch something you have an intimate connection with. If you have practiced football, there is lot more probability that you have some sort of appreciation for it. Doesn't mean practicing is the only way to create appreciation.
