Having done it for a couple of months now, I realize why podcasting has exploded: modulo production tech, it's 10x easier for producers, even though it's much unfriendlier content form for consumers.

Our ears are used to hearing the spoken word. Our eyes aren’t used to reading it.

Interesting point here that throughout our life we have feedback and standards for writing through school but receive very little to nil on our spoken word besides social interactions with family and friends... which has it’s own informal feedback loop.

Time investment for critique. You can judge the quality of
@paulg essays as being really good as an example in a few minutes Critiquing the quality of a podcast would require an hourThanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

I do like reading, but I find I learn better by oddly putting on a semi-mindless video game and listening. (e.g. Super Mario, Tetris) It’s almost like giving the monkey mind something to tinker with while the learner in me absorbs.

it’s partly lower standards; reading podcast transcripts is not as good as reading essays. but also podcasts frequently have a format with multiple hosts talking, or a host interviewing someone. it’s hard to have multiple people work on one essay

Yes. Even a moderately polished essay often has almost every sentence rethought/rewritten multiple times. The audio equivalent would be recording in multiple sentence-length takes with the script changing each time. A one-take podcast is like a first draft.

Does this mean that podcasts are objectively worse than essays? It doesn’t feel that way to me (commuter who consumes ~8hrs of podcasts per week)
