Maybe, but if there's any company in the world that deserves to be a patent troll, isn't it IBM? How much research did they do starting in the 50's that benefited society greatly but they were never able to monetize?
-
what does it even mean to "deserve to be a patent troll" and why would it matter? They are, and it's bad.

How IBM can hold 110,000 patents ? Wow, Here I am struggling to get one.

True, but the people who ran ibm in the 50s are mostly not the same people running it now. So the people who deserve the reward will forever be unrewarding or enjoy the reward of giving research to society. But the people currently profiting are profiting by stifling technology.

What is the long term solution to the troll problem? It's pretty much a cancer on the software industry (in particular) at this point.

I feel like 'trolling' is too kind. I think we need to come up with a new phrase for patent troll and patent trolling.
