I’m going to resist my strong urge to eye roll, and put this in the category of increasing insecurity/fear that people with considerable privilege are feeling these days. I get it. Allow me to reframe it for PG and others that agree with the sentiment below....https://twitter.com/paulg/status/1173907189234327553 …

I’m a black woman in America, Paul. I’ve been living in a conservative theocracy my entire life. :) The pain that many are feeling (and what I imagine inspired your tweet) is in the moral line moving in the opposite direction.

When the line moves in a way we dislike, it’s an opportunity to ask WHY we dislike it. If it is moving because the status quo causes active harm or poses life-threatening danger to people, it’s worth the shift.

+1. We have long enough lives now & are people 'cancelled' all the time or are they simply being made to be more accountable? For ex, are formerly homophobic parents *always* cancelled to their kids? The opp seems more true. Even celebrities, most survive minor scandal some major

Hi PG, in light of your various privileges (endowed and earned alike), this sophistry is one of your strangest and most condescending arguments.

Hey Paul, I think you are failing to consider maybe you experience the world differently than a black woman? See I can also make it sound like I'm smart and you're not!

Somewhere deep in the kernel of what you were trying to say you might have offered something useful (questioning the assumption that our moral changes are always for the better--perhaps we'll get more bigoted over time instead of less) but this delivery was fatally condescending.
-
Also--as you must know from your exp in software dev!--pointing out holes in things is less helpful than pointing out holes and suggesting ideas for how they could be ameliorated.

What gave you the impression that
@operaqueenie was concerned with majority opinion irrespective of moral valence? Do you really believe morality to be nothing but fashion? Do you think opposition to sexism and misogyny is nothing but a fad? Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

The only reason you’re able to express this as a harmless thought experiment is that you assume you’d be safe in that environment.
