I’m going to resist my strong urge to eye roll, and put this in the category of increasing insecurity/fear that people with considerable privilege are feeling these days. I get it. Allow me to reframe it for PG and others that agree with the sentiment below....https://twitter.com/paulg/status/1173907189234327553 …

If we extended human lifespans sufficiently, everyone would be cancelled. The drift in moral fashion would ensure that even those most carefully orthodox in their opinions would have said something that later became heretical.

People have many kinds of ways to communicate with each other and signal their intent, desires, needs, beliefs, opinions, etc. Usually we are referring to this as a language. There exists many kinds of language. We can think of actions and choices as a kind of language.

And much like the words we speak, language evolves over time. By and large, we don’t speak English the same way we did in the 18th century... though it’s not so unrecognizable that you can’t read an 18th century text. Morality works and evolves in a similar way.

As time goes on and we learn and evolve as people, our moral compass does, as well. We are all guided by a moral language, and most of us have a shared understanding what it means. But the meaning and effect of it is constantly changing.

It’s also increasingly hard to understand how it changes outside of one’s circle or “bubble”, because so many of our social interactions today happen on platforms that are built to surface things we already understand and like.

People with considerable privilege are afforded a lifestyle that either indirectly or intentionally allows them to be disengaged from the evolution of morality. They are usually insulated from the root causes that influence the changing “language”.

If they don’t make a concerted effort to break out of it, it can be very confusing and scary to see the moral language encroach on everything they thought they knew and was “right” about the world.

I think you're failing to consider that the majority's opinion could shift in a way you dislike. If America becomes a conservative theocracy, will you apologize for all the opinions you have now that the majority will then disagree with?

I’m a black woman in America, Paul. I’ve been living in a conservative theocracy my entire life. :) The pain that many are feeling (and what I imagine inspired your tweet) is in the moral line moving in the opposite direction.

When the line moves in a way we dislike, it’s an opportunity to ask WHY we dislike it. If it is moving because the status quo causes active harm or poses life-threatening danger to people, it’s worth the shift.

+1. We have long enough lives now & are people 'cancelled' all the time or are they simply being made to be more accountable? For ex, are formerly homophobic parents *always* cancelled to their kids? The opp seems more true. Even celebrities, most survive minor scandal some major

Somewhere deep in the kernel of what you were trying to say you might have offered something useful (questioning the assumption that our moral changes are always for the better--perhaps we'll get more bigoted over time instead of less) but this delivery was fatally condescending.
