Summary: The reason elite universities continue to admit mostly rich students is the hackability of the SAT (in the sense that SAT prep classes can get you higher scores).https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2019/09/10/magazine/college-admissions-paul-tough.html …

We shouldn’t expect the quality of students to be equal across schools.

It's not only or principally SAT scores that help applicants from elite backgrounds get into elite colleges. Many applicants with (near-)perfect test scores are rejected. A large proportion of students are recruited from special categories (e.g. legacy, athlete, kids of faculty).

The truly hackable part is extracurriculars and shaping your application. I had near-perfect test scores and grades but no shot at HYPS. Why? I didn't know how to get in, and no one at my school had any idea how to get in. At elite private schools, people DO know how to get in.
