As opposed to the unhackability of Grade Point Averages combined with the uninheritability of Intelligence. Right ... More likely, the NYT just got how college admissions actually work all backwards in its attempt to be politically correct.

The NYT has become very PC, but they're not wrong about the overall point. 36% of Princeton's class of 2007 came from non-sectarian private schools. Only 1.7% of American kids attend them.

It's not only or principally SAT scores that help applicants from elite backgrounds get into elite colleges. Many applicants with (near-)perfect test scores are rejected. A large proportion of students are recruited from special categories (e.g. legacy, athlete, kids of faculty).

The truly hackable part is extracurriculars and shaping your application. I had near-perfect test scores and grades but no shot at HYPS. Why? I didn't know how to get in, and no one at my school had any idea how to get in. At elite private schools, people DO know how to get in.
