The precise reason is that, as societies get richer, it's not worth keeping marginal land in cultivation. I suspect that if it weren't for farm subsidies, a lot more UK land would have reverted to woodland than has already.

Doesn't that just mean that other land in poorer countries, like the rainforest, will be used for agriculture?

I think the calculation is based on absolute rather than relative wealth. So if the people in the poorer countries become rich enough, the answer is no.
