Puzzling why not everyone gets very enthusiastic to know that the world made progress in important ways Maybe because personally the reality of progress is very uncomfortable - as it shows that we not only should but *can* do something about injustice and suffering in the world?

But we solved almost no single problem. We made progress against some, but we solved almost none (smallpox is one). What I can see as reason is when someone believes that change z has to happen to make progress against x - and z hasn’t happened but we made progress against x.

Many forms of progress for some may be tied to - or at least strongly associated with - strongly negative consequences or side effects for others, but those are not discussed. So real progress may be dismissed or viewed as an incomplete story.
