Optimism, ambition, and recruiting. Will this recipe work for your startup too? Yes. In fact you could make the case that it has been the recipe for all great organizations.https://markmcgranaghan.com/lessons-from-stripe …

(Encouraging startups came naturally to me, because I love optimism and ambition. It doesn't take an effort to encourage startups and help them figure out how to get bigger. It would take an effort not to.)

How would you effectively cultivate optimism and ambition?
-
Start with the necessities: 1. Be optimistic and ambitious 2. Surround yourself with optimistic and ambitious people

excesive optimism and ambition seems to be seen negatively in some countries/societies/cultures (at least when externalized). How do you handle that? do you adapt your scale depending on the founders background?

@paulg if I have the optimism evangelism, big picture and human leadership and connection skills, solid vision and product market fit, is it ok to feel like you need an adult in the room someone like a COO. I know how to listen. I hate on myself for not naturally being that adult -
It's ok to wish you had someone to handle the sort of work a COO does, but not to wimp out and refuse to do it yourself if you don't.

What is in your experience harder to cultivate, optimism or ambition?
-
Empirically, ambition is harder to cultivate than optimism. There are a lot more optimistic people than ambitious ones.

Any thoughts on how YC does it (so differently than the rest)?
