Watching people staring at their phones at the table in restaurants reminds me of the old days when people smoked at the table in restaurants. Except now whole families are doing it.

Was time spent reading newspapers back then even remotely comparable with the amount of time spent with phones today? I see images like this posted often in these sort of threads. Feels like a straw man
I am old enough to answer that, and the answer is no. It would have been bizarre to see an entire family reading newspapers while having dinner at a restaurant.

Sure, I doubt that anyone was spending 3 hours a day reading newspapers - like we do now with our phones, but again - it can do a lot more for us than just provide news. Smoking, on the other hand, is usually a social thing, isn’t it?
