That's my point. Whether an engineer is 10X is subjective. So you can't define a recruiting process that finds 10X developers in an objective way because there's no objective measure. So when companies say "We hire the 10X best of best", I say "Tell me how, precisely.".
It sounds like what you mean by "subjective" is random. But that is not the case with experienced writers' judgments about writing ability. If you compared my judgments of people's writing ability with those of other writers, they wouldn't disagree much.

I don't deny you can pick 10X engineers - you do it via experience & intuition. All I'm saying is that companies who attempt to be systematic about finding 10X engineers can't do that because experience and intuition cannot be turned into a recruiting process.
