I mean in a recruiting context. Everyone says they only employ the best of the best and the 10X. But I challenge anyone to quantify in any scientific way at all what they means. And if you cannot quantify it then you certainly cannot hire for it.
That seems false. I'm very good at telling good writers from bad ones, but I'm nowhere near being able to quantify it.

That's my point. Whether an engineer is 10X is subjective. So you can't define a recruiting process that finds 10X developers in an objective way because there's no objective measure. So when companies say "We hire the 10X best of best", I say "Tell me how, precisely.".

It sounds like what you mean by "subjective" is random. But that is not the case with experienced writers' judgments about writing ability. If you compared my judgments of people's writing ability with those of other writers, they wouldn't disagree much.
