I was talking to the CEO of a startup whose customers are local governments. Me: What features do people in local government want most? What excites them? CEO: Going home at 5.

Your tweet suggested that the thing that excited government workers most about work was the part where you get to leave. That’s certainly how I (and others) interpreted it.

As a government worker who works among many, I find that offensive, given how many passionate people make extraordinary sacrifices to be in public service. Very few of us are just living for the weekend. I think it’s dangerous and unfair to seed hostility like that.

Please bare in mind that having a family and life of his own is more than having kids. People want to live besides living just for work. Fortunately, startup world is becoming more aware of that too.

You'll find people are sometimes very good at maximizing ROI. Going home at 5 can be an instance of this.

Paul, there's a way of communicating that I learned about from two wonderful technical founders -- if you're OK with an unsolicited recommendation. IMHO, if you practiced, it'd give you even more impact on people. It's called "non-violent communication."https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nWb2B2uPfMo …

Maybe you're solving for something other than impact -- obviously I don't know. This said, a person saying "I find X offensive" is a less "violent" thing to say, in that framework, than "what you said is more offensive than what I said."

Funny, it sounded like a Silicon Valley startup leader dunking on government. Probably because you didn’t mention parenting, only that your CEO friend had an observation on government workers.

So your underlying assumption is that the government working is a family person?

I read this as "how can I get most of my work done by 5pm" and that is a good thing. Who doesn't want to be productive? I can see the other view, too, though. And... I sell to Government (hundreds+ customers at this point). Safely can say Gov workers are not lazy.
