When people visit your startup, they should be surprised how few people you have. A visitor who walks around and is impressed by the magnitude of your operation is implicitly saying "Did it really take all these people to make that crappy product?"

in fact, every non-technical person in my family says exactly that when I make them guess how many people work at Facebook or Twitter. What do they need [ridiculous number of engineers] for?

They need them to absorb all that revenue.

But I remember tales of #rentacrowd being brought in to small companies to convince prospective clients of their viability.

In the enterprise market you lose deals strictly because of your lower headcount regardless of how much you punch above your weight.

Hmmm... Is that really through? I always believe we'd need outside investment only when we've reached problem/Solution fit and product/ market fit. At that point, all the startup has in mind is scaling... Which always may require hiring more people.
