A simple heuristic that will save inexperienced startup founders from several different types of mistakes: be really cheap. This will save you from hiring too many people, from renting a fancy office, and from growing by buying users instead of making great things.

What about hiring developers to build the product? What about paying the salary that my team deserves?

Learn to program. Pay yourself in equity. Problem solved.

I don't think Paul is saying hire nobody. Just do it as smartly/efficiently as possible. Be cheap is just another way of saying don't waste money. Spend the money like it's your own. Don't spend it just because you have it.

I second this. Learning to code is the best thing you can do. A small snipet of code as a complete product is exponentially scalable vs a large product that needs human resource. Apart from able to build it yourself, you learn the trick on how to talk to a developer. 1/2

And even developers love to work with founders/ lead who has a grasp on technical aspects. It’s always a win-win on the long run ...

this only works for very simple, food truck-online kinds of businesses, but I doubt they could even be called startups (I recall someone having written a blog about this). A powerful, complicated multi-side (b2b & b2c) product can’t be made by learning programming by yourself.

also, learn to program is not equal to learn to code these days. build a nice product with no code tools, have a moving and honest social mission, tell a great story. bum.

Careful. This is one way we exclude ppl w under-represented backgrounds in tech & VC. To forgo income while learning to code + building a company can be impossible. And non-tech founders who bring industry/business skills should hone those strengths & build complementary team.

Indeed, but it’s always good to learn code. I’d focus on my skills from B to B+ or A than otherwise. Building business is hard. Coding + Building business are super hard. Not going that way. But will build mvp with no code to start with :)
