From direct experience: it was exactly the same. If you had competition, their ad spend would grow, and yours would in response, up to the point that all but one of you was unprofitable. The bidding mechanism still existed, it just worked differently (in column centimetres).

Larger businesses also used to have much bigger advantages in advertising because 1) their products could actually be purchased in the customer’s vicinity (distribution) 2) advertising their brand worked better when they had multiple products (since ad targeting was limited)

This paired nicely with the limited nature of shelf space in offline retail, which in turn forced retailers to give preference to well-advertised brands whose inventory turned faster

But google has 70% or so of online advertising in.the. USA. And a system in place to let advertisers have a Fight Club to duke it out to see who's willing to pay the most.

Advertising , like debt, isn't going anywhere so long as human desires remain infinite. There will always be a person trying to sell something to another person who didn't know there was anything they needed.
