A lot of scientific discoveries seem to consist of discovering that something that looks like a mess is actually clean if you look at it in a different way.

The same example came my mind too :). Also when I think, the same with discovery that there is no aether and that light travels in vaccum.

Good example but astronomy has coloured our view of what the natural world actually is. We strive to replicate the ideal friction free conditions of the heavens in the lab...and call every other environment messy. Maybe that needs to change.
