Founders I've met from Nigeria, especially, suggest that those who think Africa is going to remain poor instead of following Asia are being too pessimistic. I realize this is only anecdotal evidence, but I have quite a lot of it.

Looking at the current level of development in Africa, and Nigeria to be specific, is it realistic to play the long term game as a startup or focus on profitability from day one? This is specifically for products/businesses with low traction at the start.

Those two are not as opposed as you might think. It's often a good idea to try to be profitable even when lots of investor money is available, because it forces the product to evolve in the right direction.
