I don't understand how investors can stand having a startup pitch them with a slide deck. I get glassy-eyed as soon as I see a slide. I wonder if that's the point — that this format gives investors the option to check out if the pitch is boring?

Perhaps it's because humans are wired to create and consume stories (i.e. narratives).
-
As an example, one cannot truly explain A.I. without a historic narrative. A VC with a fixed set of questions implies knowing all there is to know about a domain. Unfortunately, there's plenty of unknowns and misconceptions in the A.I. space.

So, if slide format begins with failure, through what means do you suggest a startup pitches to investors?
-
Or, do you believe this new format will naturally present itself as the landscape changes?

Perhaps founders should suggest a bunch of questions investors might like to ask....?

A lot of founders do it because it became a habit. The usefulness of slides has been exagerated to a point where people dont think critically about it. As always, critical thinking is needed and founders that show it have a pretty good start.

As long as it's the norm, you achieve 'plausible sufficiency' by doing what everybody else is doing. An upside: it allows people and teams who have a better approach to pitching to better shine through the mud. I use lasers and live action role-play for my pitches.

Presenting 101: know and read your audience. You never "walk" through a deck. If you don't know your business, if you can't talk passionately about your business without slides or other visual aides, you're setting yourself up for failure.
