I don't understand how investors can stand having a startup pitch them with a slide deck. I get glassy-eyed as soon as I see a slide. I wonder if that's the point — that this format gives investors the option to check out if the pitch is boring?

When I meet startups I ask them questions. But I could see that format would be a problem if we'd scheduled an hour-long meeting and I knew after 10 minutes that I didn't want to invest. I'd have to keep making up questions for another 50 minutes.

Whereas if the default format is founder-explains-slides, the investor can switch into investor-asks-questions mode at will, whenever they're sufficiently interested.

If this theory is correct, the conventional investor meeting begins in failure mode. I wonder how many founders dutifully walk investors through their deck, thinking they're doing a good job, and never realize the meeting began in failure mode and never left it.

What's the most important thing you judge in those 10 minutes?

Not a VC, but I’ve seen test pitches of others, my take is that without story telling you will not catch any interest, with an exception of course, if you are really interested in the idea by yourself you will listen to pitch even if the pitch is told really bad./1

Is there a problem with "I'm going to have to pass," at the ten minute mark, and optionally giving some feedback on what they need to address?

I keep seeing examples like this that silicon valley ceos and investors have problems communicating clearly, if there's no interest there's a way to respectfully decline and indicate why, leaving room for more details from the startup or just moving on.

Why keep wasting both peoples precious time with false impressions and don’t share your point of view? It’s a chance for both to learn and grow.

I’ve spoken to investors that schedule 25mins meetings and if it’s good, they just extend for the full hour. Or they ask you to come back.
