If you had asked me when I was younger to to make a list of valuable skills, I probably wouldn't have included the ability to notice anomalies, but I'm increasingly convinced this is one of the most valuable skills of all.

I.e. if you taught people to write "essays" in the original sense/meaning of the word.

Plagiarism is a perennial issue that I think is an expected symptom related to this. Too often I see the structure of arguments emphasized over the acts of observation, citation, analysis etc. which include anomaly detection. The process should be emphasized before the prose.

It’s quite fun to read your essays (especially the essay on essays) backwards. Like, pick a section, say “Observation” and read last para first. I don’t know why it’s fun though.

I actually had an 8th grade English teacher argue that the ability to identify anomalies is the hallmark of genius. Believe it’s harder than most think. If taught formally, high risk you’d end up with a nation of QC inspectors rather than innovators.

IMHO, anomaly detection is as much an ability to frame the world from a different perspective as it is a skill to notice weirdness. I suspect learning to communicate differences in perspectives well to others and finding ways to differentiate your perspective is synergistic.

I find it fascinating how you’re one of the few people who can look back at what you wrote 15+ years ago and NOT cringe. (Not implying it deserves cringe - your thoughts are great) But why do you think this is Paul? I couldn’t share what I wrote 1 year ago without cringing
-
Do you have this feeling towards certain essays? Why do you think others often find their work from 15 years ago so cringey now?
