Ooo, hard one. Sometimes there is a *right* word that you can't make useful unless you've been exposed and played with using it.
Well-meaning teachers encourage my kids to use more "vocabulary" words in their writing. I tell them that on this one point they can ignore their teachers, because the best writing uses the simplest possible words.

That may be true when you know all the words, but that kind of thinking let the kids without practicing the development of more complex ideas that may be best served with a wide variety of words
