What hasn’t worked or why is it a bad idea?
My guess is that the reason it never works is that people don't actually want to discover local events. They want to sit at home and watch Netflix, or play video games, or whatever they usually do.

Yeah, that's possible. But if you do this, do it as a way to get a critical mass of users for something else that it morphs into.

Is this true for niche non local aggregators? One problem I think no one has solved yet is a conference/professional event aggregation.
