When I was younger I assumed perfection came from people's desire to do things well. But it can also come from curiosity: if you're curious what the perfect version of something would look like, sometimes the only way to find out is to make it.

0/ And you have to be willing to do it over and over again; iterate. I was genuinely surprised of how similar the structure whether you are literally writing code or figure out a goto market strategy. Based on first hand experience, you only have to be perfect once.

1/ Although I still haven’t grasped what key dimension about those incremental iterations whether thoughts experiments or code-compile cycles cause drastic improvements. Is it just repetition, or does the brain form better connections over time about the subject or something else

Feels like "perfection" gets an easy deflection for being unobtainable... but another version of the same thing is the pursuit of the best version of something. And that's something worth always working towards...

I end up using the word ‘canonical’ in lieu of ‘perfect’.

When you are 90% done creating something, you see the next 90% and struggle to finish the 10%. That's why many startups fight with "search for perfection". You see the next version of yourself too clearly and it's hard to focus on something else

OpenAI modified reinforcement learning to also be rewarded for the agent being curious leading to better-than-human performance but in a narrow field. Even when discovering insights, curiosity driven exploration drives innovation more than anything else.

One of my biggest pet peeves, with all the anti-perfectionist rhetoric on HN.
