People hate things that contradict their deeply-held beliefs. But since ideas that contradict deeply-held beliefs are the most interesting (see the history of physics for example), anyone on the hunt for interesting ideas will tend to offend a lot of people.

Good catch, this is so true. This may also be related to reason why ideas hunters are hated in their life and celebrated after. Supporting ideas hunters looks a good idea. How do we do that at large scale?

In modern times universities have been their refuge. I worry they won't be such a good refuge in the future, though, because universities are being attacked from without by more effective competitors and from within by political ideology.

The university model (but not necessarily particular universities) can and has survived attacks from within by political ideology. The new competition is going to make things interesting though.

I suspect that in the end the same universities that survive the current wave of political ideology will also be the ones that find a way to compete.

Possibly. And what an interesting idea. The two phenomena seem on the face of it to be unrelated, but in fact they are related: the ideology derives disproportionately from the less useful fields. The epicenter of PC at a university is usually not the MechE department.

Is this a suggestion that non-STEM fields are less "useful"? Philosophical thought is the foundation of law and critical thinking, which hold societies together.

Depends on the field. History is useful, and it's useful to know how to write well.

The whole purpose of”useful “ disciplines is to get us to a point where we can appreciate beauty and experience love.

For law in particular: To practice conflict resolution and policy making, we must answer questions like: "What is important? What is fair? What do/should we value?" It's important to train the next generation of policymakers/arbiters.

Good policy making is essential to permit science and technology to even exist and have the freedom it needs. Or how about art? Art is communication (not just fine art— media is art); the data channels that connect minds. It conveys not just facts, but also motivation.

Using the word “useful” without context is useless.
