People hate things that contradict their deeply-held beliefs. But since ideas that contradict deeply-held beliefs are the most interesting (see the history of physics for example), anyone on the hunt for interesting ideas will tend to offend a lot of people.

The university model (but not necessarily particular universities) can and has survived attacks from within by political ideology. The new competition is going to make things interesting though.

I suspect that in the end the same universities that survive the current wave of political ideology will also be the ones that find a way to compete.

This is where you lose me. As far as I can tell the political ideology attacking universities from within are conservative billionaires funding a-priori biased research centers within universities. Those kids that have a greater sense of justice than you have don't have any power
