What’s the story behind the first time you got paid to code something?

What kind of programming did you do?
I was working for an AI group that had recently been set up by a big company, and they didn't really know what to do. (This was in 1984, and no one doing AI was doing anything that worked.) They had IBM PCs and I believe the only language we had was Basic.

There was nothing they needed help with because they weren't doing anything yet. I was basically put in a cube with a new PC and had to figure out something to do. I must have written programs of some sort, but I can't remember what.
