Hypothesis: Although some newspapers can survive the switch to online subscriptions, none can do it and remain a politically neutral "newspaper of record." You have to pick a side to get people to subscribe.pic.twitter.com/bWNZzYFzFJ

One encouraging possibility: If the root of the problem is that subscribing is so high-friction that only passionate supporters have the energy to do it, then lower-friction payment methods could cause a return to more politically neutral journalism.

If the root of the problem is that you need partisan articles to draw people from Twitter into the top of your funnel, though, then lower-friction payment methods won't help, and in fact might make things worse.

Let's just make part of our ISP payment go to all the news sites. So no matter what you believe or what you read, by using the internet, you are funding the news. News sites can apply to be in the program and will need to fit non-content related criteria.

What's curious is how disproportionate many of these are when compared with ngram. When normalized, remaining trends might suggest a narrative. A few graphs stand out; New York Times seems to have learned of white supremacy only yesterday.

What do you think of this alternative take that hyper partisan journalism is the norm, and that seeking objective balance is an artifact of an ad based business model that at one point had much higher margins?https://www.wired.com/story/journalism-isnt-dying-its-returning-its-roots/ …
