One encouraging possibility: If the root of the problem is that subscribing is so high-friction that only passionate supporters have the energy to do it, then lower-friction payment methods could cause a return to more politically neutral journalism.

If the root of the problem is that you need partisan articles to draw people from Twitter into the top of your funnel, though, then lower-friction payment methods won't help, and in fact might make things worse.

How does the figure, which shows the introduction of words into the popular lexicon, and the NYT’s usage of those words, relate to your point?

I do believe that that update of the popular lexicon has not yet arrived at the Fox News office, for example. Didn't find any statistics though.

This assumes that this is a new thing. It’s not. Often localities would have a more conservative paper and a more liberal. You’re just seeing the consolidation of those things as the local conservative Pittsburgh paper is not a better source than the online national.

Geography is what is being dis intermediated and it’s opening up new markets for niche populations that are less defined by geography.
