What are you ambitious for nowadays? It would be interesting to know. You've often referred to yourself as old, but I'd like to believe that no matter how old one gets, one stays ambitious. Is it true?

I also suspect such phrases, and no doubt Hardy did too. So he would have to have been pretty sure to write that, and the fact that he wrote it makes me pay attention instead of automatically dismissing it.
