One technique I use when teaching math to little kids is to get them rapidly to the point where they can answer what seem like impossibly hard questions. E.g. half of 3, half of 5, half of 7, half of 9 (by which point they see the pattern), half of 101, half of 1001.

I don't know if this is the best way to explain the underlying concepts, but it's definitely good for morale. It seems like magic to be able to say what half of 1001 is when you're at an age where you still have to think about what half of 7 is.

Good advice. The pattern recognition is strong with our species.

I think this is the essence of Zig Engelmann's effectiveness. He knew that young kids loved the thrill you describe, so would warm them up with easy examples, followed by "that was easy, I bet you can't get this one though..." repeatedly for a whole classhttps://youtu.be/j9SjFsimywA?t=210 …

          I presume you're telling them that half of 3 is 1 and 1/2, half of 5 is 2 and 1/2, half of 7 is 3 and 1/2, etc. But have you told them what 1/2 is? If not, then you're merely pointing out that 3 = 1 + 1 + 1, 5 = 2 + 2 + 1, 7 = 3 + 3 + 1, etc.

It works for adults too. I do it when I learn programming, I always try to do something hard while I learn the basics of a new technology. It is difficult but rewarding, and you learn much more, and much better.

I found with my son (2nd grade) that "explaining" math - the way they do as guided by common core did not work. Once he did a bunch, it was easier to go back and explain.
